Behind The Scenes – December Update

It’s been a little while since I’ve done a behind-the-scenes update but I really enjoy doing them. It’s my chance to let you get to know the people behind this business better and to keep everyone up to date on what’s going on with us.

So here’s a whirlwind tour of the latest with us:

New System

For those of you who have been with me from the start have probably noticed how every single month I seem to be plagued by technical problems.

Whether it has been payments not going through, or customers not being able to log into their accounts, or the website security system locking them out, or the website not sending confirmation emails or sending too many confirmation emails.

As I type this, I am in the middle of moving everyone over to a new system which should be more reliable, more robust and just work properly! It’s not something I put together myself and is built for purpose so hopefully it will do what I need it to do.

It doesn’t affect any existing subscribers in any way (as long as I move us over properly and don’t mess it up completely) but there is one change for new subscribers coming in.

Previously when you signed up, no payment would be made until the 10th of the month – you would just be pre-authorising your payment to go out. From now on under the new system, the first payment is immediate but the second one isn’t until the second month.

For example if someone signed up on 1 January, their first payment would be on the 1st of January and their 2nd payment would be on the 10th of February.

If someone signed up on the 11th of January (or any day of the month after the 10th), their first payment would be right away but this would count towards February so your 2nd payment would not be until the 10th of March.

I hope that makes sense!

Moving The Shop Away From The Blog

One of the other changes we’re making is moving our whole shop and checkout system away from our main blog. While we’re still running the blog on, the shop features are being moved over to the new system as well. You shouldn’t notice any differences apart from the shop pages will look a bit different.

Having said that, I think having the shop function kept separate will be more secure, more reliable and provide a better shopping experience.

More Content And Blog Posts

We’re finally starting to get to grips with photo and video setups so you can expect a lot more tips, recipes, features and videos to come at you through email, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and the rest. In fact we already have a whole 2 videos on our Youtube channel already! 😛

More Baking Kits

I have been saying for a while that these were coming but hasn’t happened yet. But it is finally going to start happening in the new year. As well as our normal monthly boxes, we’re going to introduce a range of baking kits and one-off boxes which we have been planning for a while.

This will (over time) include some fancier and advanced bakes which we can’t put in to our normal boxes as we’re a bit limited by space, weight and budget, some great stuff for kids, some vegan options and eventually something to cater for gluten free baking.

Gluten free is the most challenging due to cross contamination risk so while we are still planning to introduce this, we can’t offer it until we are confident we have got all the necessary safeguards in place.

Better Boxes

After 5 months (January will be our 6th box) I think we’re starting to finally settle into a bit more of a groove as to what we should put in our boxes and how to make them enjoyable for everyone. And long may it continue with the coming year.

I will actually try to plan ahead a lot more so every single month doesn’t start to seem like a last minute panic.

Business Growth

Some of you eagle-eyes visitors may have notices a few ads appearing on this site or some sponsored links in posts. It’s not my intention to sell-out, but I have quickly realised that to grow this business as I want it to we do need to diversify a little bit.

It might look like selling out, but most of my customers know the level of service I try to provide to them and the way I see it in my mind is that the more revenue we have coming in from other sources, the more value we can start packing into our boxes without worrying about budgets and costs as much.

So if you were wondering whether I was completely losing it – well first of all i probably never had it to lose, and secondly…well that bit you just read.

Fingers crossed it works out!
